The Old Farmer's Almanac names — adopted from Algonquin, Sioux and colonial-American traditions — give each month's full moon a distinct identity tied to nature in the Northern Hemisphere.
Named for the wolves heard howling outside winter villages. Also called the Old Moon or Ice Moon.
The deepest-snow month of the year for most of the Northern Hemisphere. Also Hunger Moon.
Earthworms reappear as the soil thaws. Also Crow Moon and Sap Moon (when maple sap starts running).
Named for the spring bloom of pink moss phlox in North America. The Moon does not actually turn pink.
Spring flowers bloom across the Northern Hemisphere.
Marks the wild strawberry harvest. Also Honey Moon and Rose Moon. In June 2026 it falls on May 31 as a blue moon.
Male deer (bucks) regrow their antlers. Also Thunder Moon for summer storms.
Sturgeon were easiest to catch in the Great Lakes during August. Also Green Corn Moon.
The full moon closest to the September equinox — its early-evening rise gave farmers extra light to harvest crops. Falls in October when October's full moon is closer to the equinox.
With harvested fields, hunters could easily see prey by the bright moonlight.
Time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, ensuring winter fur supplies.
Winter's grip tightens. Also Long Nights Moon — the longest nights of the year.
A full moon within 90% of perigee (closest approach to Earth). Looks up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the smallest full moon of the year. 2026 has three consecutive supermoons: September, October and November.
The second full moon in a single calendar month — roughly once every 2.5 years. The Moon does not actually turn blue. Next one: May 31, 2026. The older 'seasonal' definition (third full moon in a season with four) is rare and largely obsolete in modern usage.
A red full moon during a total lunar eclipse. The only sunlight reaching the Moon is refracted through Earth's atmosphere — filtered to red wavelengths. Next blood moon: March 3, 2026 — totality 58 minutes, visible Americas + E Asia + Australia.
The full moon closest to the September equinox. It rises around sunset for several nights in a row, giving farmers extra light to bring in the harvest. In 2026 the Harvest Moon is August 28 (because September's full moon falls farther from the equinox).
