When Is the Next Full Moon?

A NASA-data-backed calendar of every full moon from 2026 through 2027, with the traditional name of each Moon, exact UTC times, and the supermoons, blue moons and lunar eclipses to watch for.

Short answer
The next full moon is on June 29, 2026 at 23:57 UTC — the Strawberry Moon, June's full moon and the lowest of the year, so it often glows amber low on the horizon. Before it, May 31 brings a Blue Moon (the second full moon in May).

The 12 full moon names explained

The Old Farmer's Almanac names — adopted from Algonquin, Sioux and colonial-American traditions — give each month's full moon a distinct identity tied to nature in the Northern Hemisphere.

Wolf Moon · January

Named for the wolves heard howling outside winter villages. Also called the Old Moon or Ice Moon.

Snow Moon · February

The deepest-snow month of the year for most of the Northern Hemisphere. Also Hunger Moon.

Worm Moon · March

Earthworms reappear as the soil thaws. Also Crow Moon and Sap Moon (when maple sap starts running).

Pink Moon · April

Named for the spring bloom of pink moss phlox in North America. The Moon does not actually turn pink.

Flower Moon · May

Spring flowers bloom across the Northern Hemisphere.

Strawberry Moon · June

Marks the wild strawberry harvest. Also Honey Moon and Rose Moon. In June 2026 it falls on May 31 as a blue moon.

Buck Moon · July

Male deer (bucks) regrow their antlers. Also Thunder Moon for summer storms.

Sturgeon Moon · August

Sturgeon were easiest to catch in the Great Lakes during August. Also Green Corn Moon.

Harvest Moon · September

The full moon closest to the September equinox — its early-evening rise gave farmers extra light to harvest crops. Falls in October when October's full moon is closer to the equinox.

Hunter Moon · October

With harvested fields, hunters could easily see prey by the bright moonlight.

Beaver Moon · November

Time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, ensuring winter fur supplies.

Cold Moon · December

Winter's grip tightens. Also Long Nights Moon — the longest nights of the year.

Special full moons

Supermoon

A full moon within 90% of perigee (closest approach to Earth). Looks up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the smallest full moon of the year. 2026 has three consecutive supermoons: September, October and November.

Blue moon

The second full moon in a single calendar month — roughly once every 2.5 years. The Moon does not actually turn blue. Next one: May 31, 2026. The older 'seasonal' definition (third full moon in a season with four) is rare and largely obsolete in modern usage.

Blood moon

A red full moon during a total lunar eclipse. The only sunlight reaching the Moon is refracted through Earth's atmosphere — filtered to red wavelengths. Next blood moon: March 3, 2026 — totality 58 minutes, visible Americas + E Asia + Australia.

Harvest moon

The full moon closest to the September equinox. It rises around sunset for several nights in a row, giving farmers extra light to bring in the harvest. In 2026 the Harvest Moon is August 28 (because September's full moon falls farther from the equinox).

Frequently asked questions

How often does a full moon happen?
Every 29.5 days on average — the synodic month. Twelve in a typical calendar year, thirteen every 2.5 years (producing a blue moon).
What time exactly is the full moon?
The instant of full moon — when Sun-Earth-Moon align at 180° — is given in UTC. Convert to your local time by adding or subtracting your offset. The Moon looks visually full for about ±36 hours around the exact instant.
Can I see the full moon from anywhere?
Yes — anywhere on Earth where the sky is clear and the Moon is above the horizon (roughly half the planet at any moment). It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise.
Why does the full moon look bigger near the horizon?
The 'Moon illusion' is purely visual — the Moon's actual angular size is the same overhead and at the horizon. Your brain compares it to nearby objects (trees, buildings) and decides it must be huge. Cover the surrounding landscape and the illusion disappears.
What is the difference between a full moon and a supermoon?
A supermoon is a full moon — specifically, one occurring within 90% of perigee, so it appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the smallest full moon of the year. Typically 3–4 of the 12 full moons each year are supermoons.
