February's full moon — named for the heavy snows of late winter. Why it's also called the Hunger Moon, the lore behind it, and how to see it.
The name comes from the tribes of the northeastern United States, where February brings the heaviest and deepest snow of the year. Because those snows made hunting so difficult, the same moon was widely known as the Hunger Moon or Storm Moon. In some European traditions it aligned with festivals of purification at winter's end.
As a deep-winter full moon, the Snow Moon sits opposite a low Sun and climbs high across the sky, staying up for many hours. Its light cuts cleanly through cold, dry winter air, making it look bright and sharply silver.
Of all the traditional moon names, February's carries the hardest edge. By the time the Snow Moon rose, winter stores were running out, game was scarce under deep snow, and the distance to spring felt longest — which is why the Hunger Moon variant survived alongside it. In parts of Europe the same full moon fell near Candlemas (February 2) and the older festival of Imbolc, both midpoint markers between solstice and equinox: half of winter burned, half still to endure.
The Storm Moon name records the other February reality — the month of the fiercest blizzards in the American northeast, where these names were coined. One moon, three names, all describing the same stretch of the calendar from different kinds of hardship.
The 2026 Snow Moon reaches fullness on Sunday, February 1 at 22:09 UTC — early evening in the Americas (5:09 PM EST), just as the Moon is rising, and late night in Europe. That makes the night of February 1–2 the prime night on both sides of the Atlantic, with February 2 a near-perfect encore. Curiously, 2026 gives the Snow Moon on the 1st of the month — so February 2026 almost managed a second full moon, missing a rare February Blue Moon by just a couple of days.
As a deep-winter moon it crosses the sky high, second only to the Cold and Wolf Moons, and February's dry, cold air keeps it sharp and white all night. No equipment needed; a south-facing window is genuinely enough.
