July's full moon — named for the velvet antlers male deer grow each summer, not its colour. The lore, why it rides low and golden, and how to see it.
The name comes from Algonquin and other Native American traditions. Early summer is when male deer — bucks — push out their new antlers, which they shed and regrow every year; by July they grow fast in soft velvet. The same moon is also called the Thunder Moon for July's frequent storms, and the Hay Moon for the haymaking season.
July's full moon falls just after the summer solstice, so — like June's Strawberry Moon — it sits opposite a high Sun and takes one of the lowest paths of the year across the southern sky. A low Moon shines through more atmosphere, picking up a warm amber-gold tint near the horizon, and the 'moon illusion' can make it look strikingly large at moonrise.
The name is a field observation of one of the fastest processes in mammal biology. A buck's antlers are not horns — they are shed and regrown from scratch every single year, and in July they are growing at their fastest, sheathed in the blood-rich "velvet" that feeds them. Antler is among the fastest-growing tissues known in mammals, adding up to a couple of centimetres a day in large deer. The Algonquian peoples who named this moon were tracking a calendar written on the animals themselves; by the autumn Hunter's Moon, the velvet is stripped and the antlers are weapons.

Look southeast as twilight fades: like all high-summer moons it hugs a low arc, and near the horizon the "moon illusion" makes it look enormous while the extra air in the light path stains it amber and gold. July's other name, the Thunder Moon, is a fair weather warning — if evening storms build, the gap right after sunset is often the clearest window before they arrive. The moon stays low all night, so a clear southern horizon matters more than dark skies.
